A lot of my favorites in there, and some by favorite artists I'll have to catch up with. I'm sorry I'll miss your panel.

Yeah, my program alphabetized the list by first word, whether or not it was an article. What the heck, that keeps my traffic a bit, since I got two posts from you instead of one.

Wow, what a playlist! I would add "Kinder Murder" to the Elvis Costello choices ("There's a ladder to heaven from a battered stiletto...")
Thanks. A few convention attendees offered additional suggestions, which I will post if
a) I wrote them in my notebook
and
b) I can read my handwriting.
I'll be interested to learn which "character" in "Kinder Murder" speaks the line you quoted.
Reading your list I realized that there is certainly much non-contemporary music that might qualify as noir. Case in point = Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Which reminded me of Maurice Ravel's Pavane pour une infante défunte and Camille Saint-Saëns' Danse macabre and Le cygne, later made famous as a solo for ballerina as The Dying Swan.
The list goes on forever!
Right. You saw Mahler on my list, and Berlioz and Carmen are there, too. I mentioned in my talk that when I told my paper's classical music critic about this project, he said, "If an opera doesn't have desperation in it, it's not good. An opera without desperation is a Broadway musical with opera singers."
The list goes on forever is right, which is why noir is life!
Richard Edwards, who also attended the conference, nominated "The Cold Cold Ground" as Tom Waits' noirest song.
That would actually make a CRACKING LP box set. Good on you!
I was sorry to see Howling Wolf's THE KILLING FLOOR didn't make the list. I think SUGAR's "That's a Good Idea" would make a great one too.

Thanks. Compiling that list and reading the comments clued me in to quite a bit of music I had not known before.
Interesting you should single out the acoustic versions of each. Stripped-down instrumentation can add much to a dark, foreboding atmosphere, on "Atlantic City," for example.
